Late Holocene Environmental History and Norse Settlement in Outer Fjords from South Greenland: A Case Study at Lake Qallimiut

چکیده
To complement discussions about vegetation history and climate variations in south Greenland, especially during the Norse settlement, we developed a sedimentological multiproxy approach to study 4300-year-old lacustrine core comprising pollen analysis, NPPs physical measurements (magnetic susceptibility, density, grain size), geochemical analyses (X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses). Sediment archives were retrieved from river-fed lake, Lake Qallimiut, located outer fjords of Vatnahverfi area. The analysis indicated transition juniper willow cover dwarf birch forest. Non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) suggested grazing pressure presence wild herbivores between 2300 1800 cal. BC. From ca. 1000 AD, farmers was evidenced this area by archaeological surveys, confirm human activities 11th century end 13th century. However, impact progressively vanished 12th centuries, much earlier than at other sites.

Extended Abstract: 1-Introduction There is a direct relationship in evaporative deposit with the changes in the depth of the lake. Therefore?, valuable information is gained regarding the causation of changes in environment over time. Evaporite minerals formation is a natural phenomenon accruing in water-bodies containing deferent mineral Since sulfate is abundant in seawater and saline lakes...
متن کاملLate Holocene Caspian Sea Level Changes and its Impacts on Low Lying Coastal Evolution: a Multidisciplinary Case Study from South Southeastern Flank of the Caspian Sea
Caspian Sea is the largest land locked water body in the world and has been characterized by significant relative sea-level changes since the Pliocene. The sea-level oscillations have strongly impacted the coastal areas depending on geomorphological setting. This study aims to investigate the impacts of sea level oscillations on low-lying coasts of the southeastern flank of the Caspian Sea...
متن کاملHolocene Environmental Variability in Southern GreenlandInferred from Lake Sediments
Sediments from Qipisarqo Lake provide a continuous Holocene paleoenvironmental record from southern Greenland. Following deglaciation and glacio-isostatic emergence of the basin from the sea ∼9100 cal yr B.P., proxies of lake paleoproductivity, including biogenic silica and organic matter, increased markedly until 6000 cal yr B.P. and thereafter remained stable over the ensuing warm three mille...
متن کاملEnvironmental factors structuring Arctic megabenthos—a case study from a shelf and two fjords
From photographic samples, we describe the benthic megafaunal communities in two north Svalbard fjords and on the adjacent continental shelf. We analyze the fauna in relation to abiotic factors of depth, bottom water temperature, percent cover of hard substrata, heterogeneity of stone size, and bottom-water turbidity to explore how these factors might affect the fauna and how they are related t...
